AAA Passport Photo: What Members and Non-Members Pay

How Much Is a Passport Photo at AAA?

The fee depends on your membership tier, and it is the widest spread of any photo counter in the country. A Premier member pays nothing for their first set of the year. A non-member pays $17 plus tax for the same two photos.

Why Does the AAA Price Change Depending on Where You Live?

Because AAA is not a single company. It is a federation of independent clubs.

Each club runs its own branches, sets its own fees and publishes its own pages, which is why aaa.com has no national passport photo price to point you at. The ladder above is what Auto Club Enterprises publishes. A club in another region can charge something different for the identical set of two photos, and neither one is wrong.

The practical version: the tier discount is a AAA-wide idea, the actual number is local. Call your branch before you drive over if the exact figure matters to you.

Is a AAA Membership Worth It Just for the Photos?

On the photo alone, no, and it is worth being blunt about that.

A Classic membership costs considerably more per year than the $7 you would save against the non-member fee. The saving is real only if the membership is already paying for itself on roadside assistance and travel discounts, in which case the photo is close to a rounding error, and a free one at Premier.

If you are not a member and have no other reason to join, the $17 non-member fee puts AAA in the same bracket as Walgreens at $16.99 and CVS at $17.99, without the pharmacy's longer opening hours.

Can AAA Handle the Passport Application Too?

No, and this catches people out.

AAA is explicit that its Travel Advisors do not carry passport or visa forms and cannot help with the application itself. What a branch does is take the photo you staple to it. For the application you still need a passport acceptance facility, which is usually a Post Office or a county clerk.

AAA does offer expedited applications through a partner service, but that runs online rather than at the counter, so it does not save you the trip. USPS is the option that puts the photo and the application in one visit.

What If the Photo Comes Back Rejected?

You make the trip again, and the fee does not protect you.

AAA's own passport page carries the warning that about one in three passports is rejected because of applicant error. The photo is one of the most common reasons: head too large or too small in the frame, a shadow on the background, a hint of a smile the reviewer reads as a non-neutral expression.

A branch counter is not a portrait studio, and no counter can promise the passport office will accept the result. That risk is the argument for checking the photo against every rule before money changes hands rather than after.

What size is a US passport photo?

Taken at a AAA branch or on your own sofa, a US passport photo has to hit the same official size: a 2 x 2 inch square, with your head 1 to 1⅜ inches from chin to crown. Miss that range and the passport office rejects it, however good the photo looks.

How AAA Compares to the Other In-Person Options

For members, AAA undercuts everyone: $8 at Plus beats even Walmart at $7.64, and Walmart only prints a photo you supply and check yourself. For non-members the picture flattens out.
