The photo has to be taken in the last 6 months and show you as you look today. It has to be the original, with no filters or retouching. A printed photo also has to be on glossy or matte photo paper. No checker can read these from a file, so check them yourself before you send it.
A phone picture of a printed photo changes its proportions, so we can't measure it reliably, and the online renewal does not accept a photo of a photo. Ask the store for the digital file. Some include it with the prints and some charge for it; our passport photo price comparison shows which.
Your photo goes to our server, is measured, and is deleted when the check finishes, usually within a few seconds. The measurements are not stored either. We keep a record that you agreed to the measurement. Details are in our biometric data policy and privacy policy.

It measures head size, eye height, background, expression, glasses, light, focus and the file itself against the U.S. Department of State rules, and marks each one as passing, needing a second look, or failing. The State Department makes the final decision on every photo.

Yes. The online renewal takes a square photo between 600 x 600 and 1200 x 1200 pixels, as a JPG, PNG or HEIC file from 54 KB to 10 MB, and the same face and background rules as a printed photo. The checker tests the file and the photo.
Either a measurement is within 2 percent of the photo's height from a limit, or the checker thinks it sees glasses or a hat and wants you to confirm. Any measurement taken from a photo has a small margin of error, so a reading that close could fall on either side. A photo that clears every limit with room to spare is the safer one to send.
